  • Life span of three save states:
  1. Normal temperature (20℃~25℃): After 2 to 3 years, color negative films begin to show a slight increase in gray in the dark areas and a color cast in the blue-sensitive layer; in high-sensitivity black and white films (ISO 3200), the gray fog thickens sharply within half a year.
  3. Cryogenic freezing (-18℃~-20℃): The thermal motion of molecules is almost completely frozen, and the hydrolysis of bottom ash and dye stops. Even Fujifilm Provia or Kodak Plus-X, which have been discontinued for 15 years, can still output the same transparent picture quality as fresh from the factory after being frozen and thawed!

Many novices take out a roll of film from the freezer at -18°C and can’t wait to tear open the plastic tube and load it into the camera on the spot. The consequences are often disastrous:

  • Physical Principle of Dew Point Temperature (Dew Point): In a humid room in summer (temperature 28°C, relative humidity 70%), the dew point temperature of the air is approximately 22°C.
  • Instant condensation and condensation on the surface of the cold film: When the film that is as cold as -18℃ comes into contact with the air, the water vapor in the surrounding air quickly cools down to below the dew point when encountering the extremely cold surface, and instantly condenses into dense microscopic water droplets and hoarfrost on the surface of the film!
  • Emulsion Emulsion Melt & Stick:
  • Das Innere der schmalen Kassettenspalten des 135er-Films und der engen Rollenschichten des 120er-Films ist mit Kondenswasser gefüllt;
  • The gelatin film instantly melts, becomes sticky and swells after absorbing water;
  • When you advance the film in the camera, the softened film directly tears off and adheres to the adjacent film base.

3. Rigorous and scientific timetable for gradual warming and thawing

The core iron rule of thawing: The film must be allowed to naturally heat up to room temperature in a completely sealed and air-isolated environment before it can be unpacked!

  • Option 1: Aus dem Kühlschrank nehmen und auftauen (0℃~4℃):
  • Öffnen Sie nicht die original versiegelte Plastiktube oder den Aluminiumfolienbeutel;
  • Place directly in a dry and ventilated place indoors and let it sit for at least 2~3 hours;
  • Touch the plastic tube casing lightly with the back of your hand to make sure it has completely returned to the same feeling temperature as the indoor air before you can unpack the machine.
  • Phase 1 (cold storage to refrigeration): Transfer the sealing film from the -18°C freezer to the 4°C freezer, leave it for 6~8 hours (or overnight), and perform the first step temperature and temperature rise buffer;
  • Second stage (refrigerate to room temperature): Take it out of the refrigerator and place it in a room at room temperature, and let it sit for 2~3 hours;
  • In case of emergency shooting, double jump is not possible: the unopened sealed bag must be placed in a room at room temperature for at least 6 hours. It is strictly forbidden to tear open the sealed package in advance out of curiosity.

The inside of the refrigerator freezer is usually an extremely humid environment (evaporator defrost cycles can cause air humidity as high as 80%~90%):

  1. Extra protection in original, unopened packaging: Although 135 film comes with a small plastic can, the plastic cover is not absolutely airtight. Mehrere Folienrollen müssen zusammen in einen verdickten doppelschichtigen Druckverschlussbeutel (Ziploc Heavy Duty) verpackt werden.
  • Prepare a household food vacuum machine and an aluminum foil composite vacuum bag (aluminum foil can 100% block water vapor penetration and environmental trace rays);
  • Geben Sie 1–2 Packungen farbverändernde Silikagel-Trockenmittelpackungen (Hinweis auf Silikagel) in den Beutel;
  • Vakuum-Heißversiegelung, der Beutelkörper sitzt fest. Put it in the freezer, and even if it is kept frozen for 10 years, the bag will always remain absolutely dry like a desert.
  1. Warehouse marking and batch management: Use an oil-based pen to mark the entry date, film model and emulsion batch number (Emulsion Batch) on the outside of the vacuum bag, and follow the "first in, first out" principle to manage film assets.
