Autofocus Tracking Sensitivity: Canon EOS R6 V Servo AF Adjustment Example

Explain the menu meanings and trade-offs of Servo AF tracking sensitivity and acceleration/deceleration tracking using the Canon EOS R6 V manual, and provide adjustment methods based on test shots; do not extend to other brands/models, and do not promise guaranteed target locking during obstruction.

First, set the baseline with the default value

First, confirm that the shooting mode uses Servo AF and test with the same set of subjects, distances, and regions. In Case Auto on the Canon EOS R6 V, 0 is the standard value; Locked on −1 tends to continue tracking when the subject is briefly blocked or deviates from the AF point, while Responsive +1 is suitable for situations where the camera wants to switch between multiple subjects. These are the case-mode options for the device, not cross-brand generic formulas. 〔G-AF-TR-01〕

Tracking sensitivity controls the tendency of subject switching

In the Case Manual for the Canon EOS R6 V, Tracking sensitivity handles the response of non-subjects passing through the AF point or deviating from it. Negative values tend to continuously track the current subject; the more negative the value, the longer the manual describes it as holding the target; but if the focus shifts to the wrong subject, switching back to the target may be slower. Positive values prefer continuous focus on subjects at different distances within the AF point coverage and are more likely to focus on unintended subjects. Start from zero and then make small adjustments based on actual occlusion. 〔G-AF-TR-02〕

Acceleration/deceleration tracking targets speed changes

Acceleration/deceleration tracking for the same model is used to respond when the subject suddenly starts, stops, or changes speed significantly. The manual associates negative values with more stable speeds or slightly occlusion scenarios, and positive values with sudden speed changes; Positive values may also be allergic to minor movements and temporarily lose balance. Don't just apply numbers based on topics like "football" or "birds"; first look at the subject's movement patterns and photo results. 〔G-AF-TR-03〕

Use the reproducible test shot to select and adjust direction

Fixed camera position and focus area, capturing short sequences of subjects moving continuously, briefly occluded, and suddenly changing speed. Only one parameter was adjusted at a time, recording and comparing the settings and situations where the target was continuously maintained, switched to the wrong subject, or briefly unstable; If the effect worsened, it was returned to baseline. This method is the editorial department's comparison recommendation; results are affected by lens, area, subject, and shooting conditions; Canon's numerical scale cannot be directly converted to Sony, Nikon, or Fujifilm settings.

Don't treat focus settings as defocus insurance

Tracking sensitivity only changes the camera's response tendency under specified conditions; it does not guarantee focus freezing at target distance during occlusion, nor does it guarantee instant recovery after the target reappears. The cross-brand scale table, fixed scene "golden configuration," motion prediction sampling frequency, and lens button freeze motor descriptions in the original document are not supported by this manual and therefore should not be considered operational conclusions.
