In-Camera Noise Reduction and RAW Post-Processing: Determined by Camera Model and File Format

Distinguish between camera JPEG processing and RAW post-processing, and explain the settings and format limitations using official documentation from Sony ILCE-1, Nikon Z 9, and Adobe Camera Raw; do not speculate on unpublished ISP internal algorithms.

RAW vs JPEG: Where Processing Happens

RAW files save the camera sensor's original image data and shooting metadata, and RAW software interprets this data to generate a color image; adjustments made in Adobe Camera Raw preserve the original RAW data. JPEG, on the other hand, is processed and compressed by the camera before being written to a file. The internal processing steps of different cameras are not fully disclosed, so one cannot assume that all models use the same ISP workflow.〔G-ISP-01〕

In-camera High ISO Noise Reduction: Consider Specific Models and File Formats First

The Sony ILCE-1 user guide lists High ISO NR options as Normal, Low, and Off; this function is not available for RAW, and even in RAW+JPEG or RAW+HEIF modes, it does not apply to RAW files. This is the behavior specified in the manual for this model and cannot be generalized to all cameras.〔G-ISP-02〕

Menus from Different Manufacturers Are Not Interchangeable

The Nikon Z 9 manual indicates that high ISO photos can undergo noise reduction and provides options for High, Normal, Low, and Off; the manual also notes that the strength varies with ISO and option. Similar menu names do not imply the same algorithm or effect; to adjust in-camera JPEG, follow the instructions for the specific camera and check details and noise trade-offs using actual files.〔G-ISP-03〕

RAW Post-processing Noise Reduction Also Has Format Limits

Adobe Camera Raw Denoise applies to certain RAW types it lists, such as Bayer, X-Trans mosaic RAW, Linear DNG, and Apple ProRAW; non-RAW files like JPEG, TIFF, and HEIC are not supported. Processing generates a new DNG file. Confirm the software version and whether the camera file type is supported before comparing pre- and post-processed images; the software description does not guarantee effects on every photo.〔G-ISP-04〕

Steps That Can Be Verified

If future adjustments may be needed, record the shooting format and in-camera settings and keep the original files; if camera straight-out images are needed, shoot test frames and compare noise reduction settings at the target size. When using RAW software, first confirm format support, then decide whether to process based on local details and overall visual impression. Moiré, demosaic internal algorithms, and temporal noise reduction mechanisms vary by specific camera/software models; this guide does not provide uncited general descriptions of them.
