Camera Rephotography Resolution and Device Limits

Camera rephotography involves using a digital camera to photograph a film positioned in front of a transmitted light source. The level of detail in the resulting image is affected by the camera, lens, magnification, focus, alignment, film flatness, and cropping; the lens's nominal 1:1 magnification does not guarantee a fixed pixel count. VALOI's guidelines also associate output resolution with the digital camera used. Camera rephotography and film scanning are different workflows; the choice should be based on target size, existing equipment, and post-processing needs, without presuming that one method is generally superior to the other.〔G-CS-01〕

Alignment, Focus, and Aperture

Secure the camera on a stand and check that it is parallel to the film plane. VALOI lists two alignment methods: using a spirit level and mirror inspection; recheck after every device adjustment. Clean the film, film holder, and workbench, capture test frames, and check the focus at a magnified view. VALOI recommends an aperture of f/5.6–f/11 to address sharpness and vignetting issues in its system; results will vary with different lenses, magnifications, and film conditions, so test frames should guide the final setup.〔G-CS-02, G-CS-03〕

Negative Lab Pro Conversion of Negatives

The Lightroom RAW workflow for Negative Lab Pro recommends sampling the white balance from the film's edge; if no edge is available or Lightroom cannot sample it, try Auto WB. Cropping or using a Border Buffer prevents non-film areas such as clamps or uncovered light from affecting conversion analysis. The official guide describes the Basic color model as a relatively neutral starting point; color results still need to be checked according to the film, light source, and personal goals. Versions and operating systems may affect menus or shortcuts, so follow the current official guide.〔G-CS-04, G-CS-05, G-CS-06, G-CS-07〕

Flatbed Scanner Specification Examples

Specifications only indicate the manufacturer’s nominal parameters for a specific model. The official materials for the Epson Perfection V850 Pro list a Dual Lens System optical resolution of 4800 / 6400 dpi and Dmax 4.0; these parameters cannot be extrapolated to other devices and cannot alone prove the actual effective detail or general image quality of scanned film.〔G-CS-08〕
