Analysis of Camera Stepless Aperture Rings and Movie Lens Focus Travel Gear Module (0.8 Mod) Industrial Standards

Three major industrial features of cine lenses: stepless aperture (Clickless T-Stop), long focus throw (270°~300°), and practical assembly of standardized 0.8 mod (Mod 0.8 / 32 Pitch) gear rings.

1. Three fatal flaws of ordinary camera lenses for shooting movies and videos

Many video creators use high-end photography fixed-focus lenses (such as 50mm f/1.2) to shoot videos, but often encounter serious problems when moving the lens and adjusting the light:

  1. Aperture jump and mechanical "click stops":
  • The aperture ring of the camera lens has a 1/3-stop mechanical positioning steel ball damping (clicking).
  • When moving the lens with a large light ratio indoors and outdoors, the photographer needs to smoothly adjust the aperture control; every time the camera lens turns one stop, the aperture blades will have an obvious step-like "brightness jump and bump", and the body microphone will record a crisp and harsh "click, click" mechanical impact noise.
  1. Short Focus Throw:
  • In order for the autofocus motor to achieve focus quickly, the physical travel of the focus ring of the camera lens is extremely short (usually only 60° to 90°);
  • From 1 meter to 3 meters, the handwheel only moves a mere 3mm on the lens barrel! The focus operator cannot perform micron-level fine focus at all, and the focus will fly off instantly at the slightest touch.
  1. Focus Breathing effect:
  • When the focus ring is rotated, the focal length changes significantly, and the edges of the picture zoom in and out violently.

2. Deconstruction of industry standards for movie lenses: born for rigorous sports

Professional cine lenses (such as ARRI Master Prime, Zeiss Supreme Prime, DZOFILM, Sirui cine lenses) are completely different species in terms of physical structure:

  1. De-clicked T-Stops:
  • Completely abolishing the mechanical steel ball gear, the aperture ring provides absolutely stepless, completely silent, and silky-smooth rotational damping from fully open to minimum;
  • The nominal value is changed from the $f$ value representing the geometric aperture to the $T$ value (Transmission Stop)** representing the real physical light transmittance, ensuring that the same set of lenses will be exposed at the same T value with absolutely 100% no deviation in light and dark tones.
  1. Huge focusing range of 270° to 300°:
  • The lens focus ring is elongated to nearly a full circle of extremely large arc stroke;
  • The focusing distance from 1 meter to 2 meters is spatially stretched into a wide rotation range of several centimeters. The lens barrel is laser-engraved with dense physical foot/meter distance scale lines that are accurate to the millimeter level, allowing the focus operator to control the focus with absolute confidence and speed during blind exercises.
  1. Zero Focus Breathing:
  • Through the complex floating focus compensation lens group (Floating Elements) internally, no matter how the focus ring is violently pulled up between the nearest and infinity, the frame around the picture will never move at all, eliminating any frame zoom distortion.

3. Industrial standard gear module (0.8 Mod / 32 Pitch) mathematical standard

In film industry shooting, it is never allowed to readjust the position of the follow focus and motor bracket when changing the lens:

  1. 0.8 module (Modulus 0.8) gear pitch definition:
  • Module (Mod) is the international metric standard for gear tooth profile dimensions, defined as the ratio of the pitch circle diameter to the number of teeth;
  • The corresponding pitch (Pitch) of 0.8 Mod is:
    $$\text{Tooth pitch} p = \pi \times \text{Mod} \approx 3.14159 \times 0.8 \approx \mathbf{2.513 \text{ mm}}$$
  • Corresponds to the North American Imperial standard 32-Pitch (32 teeth per inch).
  1. Full set of lens group with “uniform outer diameter and gear position” (Uniform Dimensions):
  • A collection of top cine lenses (from 18mm, 25mm, 35mm, 50mm to 85mm);
  • The outer diameter of the front filter of all lenses is strictly unified to 95mm or 114mm**;
  • The longitudinal physical distance of the focus gear ring and aperture gear ring relative to the lens mount plane of all lenses are strictly manufactured to be exactly the same**!
  • Great industrial efficiency bonus: After the first officer set up the wireless follow focus motor and matte box on the camera rail, the crew changed from a 24mm lens to an 85mm lens. All they had to do was unscrew the bayonet and replace the new lens. The position of the follow focus motor and matte box can be perfectly aligned without moving even one millimeter. The lens change time was shortened from 5 minutes to 15 seconds!

4. Practical guide for "Cine-modding" of ordinary camera lenses

Independent creators on a budget can transform their old, high-quality manual lenses into professional film workflow lenses:

  1. Aperture stepless silencer modification (De-clicking):
  • Disassemble the rear lens mount retaining ring and find the aperture positioning spring and micro steel balls inside;
  • Use tweezers to safely remove the small steel ball or spring piece and store it (it can be restored later), and re-apply high-viscosity damping silicone grease to the inner wall of the aperture ring;
  • After reinstalling, the aperture ring instantly has the same smooth, stepless, and high-damping silent rotation feel as a top-grade movie lens.
  1. Install 0.8 Mod seamless high-precision metal gear ring:
    -Abandon loose and slippery zip tie gear loops;
  • Measure the precise outer diameter of the lens barrel focus ring and order a special aluminum alloy seamless 0.8 Mod movie focus gear ring (Seamless Focus Gear Ring);
  • Assembly by the thermal expansion and contraction method: Use a hair dryer to slightly heat the aluminum alloy gear ring, put it gently on the lens focus ring, and tighten it tightly after cooling. The handwheel rotates with zero false position and zero backlash, instantly transforming into a professional-level film and television fighting force.
