Canon DGO Dual Gain Output: Readout and Synthesis of the C300 Mark III

Based on Canon's white paper explaining the dual gain output, signal fusion, and manufacturer-reported performance of the EOS C300 Mark III DGO, distinguish between mechanisms supported by evidence and the unsourced inferences in the original text.

What Problem DGO Solves

Canon developed Dual Gain Output (DGO) for the 4K Super 35mm sensor of the EOS C300 Mark III. According to its white paper: each photosensitive pixel's photodiode signal is read out using two different gains, and then combined after exposure adjustment to balance highlight preservation and shadow noise performance. The following mechanisms and values are limited to Canon's description of this C300 Mark III system.〔G-DGO-DUAL-GAIN-01〕

Responsibilities of the Two Gain Readouts

Canon refers to one as “Saturation Priority” to protect highlight information; the other is called “Noise Priority,” which improves shadow signal relative to downstream noise by applying higher gain followed by digital adjustment. The two results are adjusted for exposure and merged to form the output.〔G-DGO-DUAL-GAIN-02〕〔G-DGO-DUAL-GAIN-01〕

Readout is Time-Multiplexed, Not Simultaneous Parallel Amplification

The white paper describes the dual-gain implementation of the C300 Mark III as a time-multiplexed sequential process: sensor signals are first stored, then read out in sequence at different gains, and then adjusted and merged. Therefore, the description "two groups of analog amplifiers output in parallel at the same moment" is inaccurate; it should not be interpreted that motion artifacts are zero or that the two paths originate from two independent scene exposures.〔G-DGO-DUAL-GAIN-03〕

Understanding Dynamic Range and Noise Figures

Canon reports that the DGO system of the EOS C300 Mark III has a dynamic range exceeding 16 stops and states that the noise floor is reduced by more than 1 stop after merging while still protecting highlights. These are manufacturer-reported figures specific to this model's DGO implementation and should not be taken directly as specifications for all DGO sensors or as cross-brand independent test conclusions. For the supported recording modes, refer to the C300 Mark III manual; this guide does not infer frame rate switching rules not supported by this white paper.〔G-DGO-DUAL-GAIN-04〕〔G-DGO-DUAL-GAIN-05〕
