Nikon Z 8 Long Exposure Noise Reduction: Activation Range, Waiting Time, and Precautions
Explain the effective conditions for long exposure noise reduction on the Nikon Z 8, processing wait times, time display, and the consequences of interruption; do not extend to explaining sensor dark current physics, behaviors of other models, or post-processing dark frame workflows.
Function and Activation Conditions
The Nikon Z 8's Photo Shooting Menu offers Long Exposure NR. The manual states that when set to ON, it reduces highlights or haze-like noise in photos taken with a shutter speed slower than 1 second. This explanation only covers the functions specified in the Z 8 manual and does not represent that all cameras have the same noise reduction mechanism.〔G-Z8-LENR-01〕
Allow Processing Time After Shooting
Long exposure noise reduction is performed after the photo is taken. During processing, the shooting display shows "Performing noise reduction," and the control panel's "Job NR" flashes; shooting cannot continue until this prompt disappears. Nikon states that the recording time after shooting approximately doubles. When using Bulb, Time, or shutter speeds longer than 30 seconds, the control panel will also show the remaining processing time after shooting.〔G-Z8-LENR-02, G-Z8-LENR-03〕
Do Not Turn Off the Camera Before Processing Is Complete
If the camera is turned off during processing, the photo will still be saved, but long exposure noise reduction will not be applied to that photo. When continuous shooting or controlling the shooting interval is needed, this processing wait time can be factored into the plan; settings and trade-offs in other scenarios should be determined based on the actual shooting task, and this guide does not provide universal on/off advice.〔G-Z8-LENR-04〕
