DSLR Camera Dust Inspection and Safe Cleaning: Taking the Nikon D850 Sensor as an Example

According to the Nikon D850 official manual, the options for cleaning the image sensor and the boundaries of manual cleaning do not generalize spots on photos as AF malfunctions, nor do they provide guidance for disassembling and cleaning the mirror box/focus module by oneself.

First, Confirm Whether Dust Appears in the Photos

The DSLR body contains multiple different components: blemishes in the photos, dust in the viewfinder, and autofocus anomalies cannot be generalized as "dust". The Nikon D850 manual lists dust on the image sensor as a potential issue that may appear in photos and provides a dedicated image sensor cleaning menu. This article only explains the preliminary inspection of photo blemishes and the safe cleaning boundaries for the D850, and does not treat blemishes as a diagnostic for autofocus faults.〔G-DSR-01〕

First, Use the In-Camera Cleaning Option

If you suspect dirt appears in your images, first follow the D850 manual to use the "Clean image sensor" option in the Setup Menu. The camera offers "Clean now," and you can also set it to clean automatically at startup or shutdown. When performing "Clean now," hold the camera with the bottom facing down as described in the manual; do not disconnect or remove the power during cleaning, and wait until the menu reappears before taking further action.〔G-DSR-02, G-DSR-03〕

Boundaries for Manual Cleaning

If in-camera cleaning does not resolve the issue, the D850 manual notes that the image sensor is very fragile and easy to damage, and it recommends that manual cleaning be carried out only by Nikon-authorized service personnel. The manual's outlined inspection steps only allow dust and lint to be removed with a blower; blowers with bristles must not be used, and the image sensor must not be touched or wiped. Contaminants that cannot be removed with a blower should be handled by authorized service.〔G-DSR-04〕

Do Not Treat Cleaning as Autofocus Repair

Cleaning the image sensor addresses blemishes that may appear in photos and is not an instruction for cleaning independent AF modules. If the camera continues to fail to focus or the focus is inaccurate, stop inserting tools into the camera body and check settings, lens compatibility, and shooting conditions according to the camera and lens manuals. If the issue persists, have Nikon-authorized service personnel inspect it. This article does not provide cleaning or disassembly steps for the mirror box or independent AF modules.
