1. Traditional digital printing (RA-4 silver salt) vs. Giclée Pigment Print

Photography works move from screen to paper printing, and the output method determines the final depth of image quality and durability of collection:

  1. Digital laser silver salt printing (such as Fuji Magic Hand/Green Light Machine):
  • Principle: RGB laser or LED exposes traditional color photo paper, and develops and bleaches with chemical solution.
  • Limited color gamut: The color gamut space is narrow (only slightly larger than sRGB), and highly saturated cyan and deep red cannot be displayed; dyes are easily oxidized and faded under light, and the storage life is usually only 15-30 years.
  1. Giclée:
  • Hardware: Use 10-color to 12-color micro-piezoelectric high-precision art output devices (such as Epson SureColor P9000, Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-4100).
  • Ink: Microencapsulated inorganic mineral pigment ink (Pigment Ink)** is used instead of water-based dye ink (Dye Ink) that is easy to fade. Includes matte black, photo black, gray, light gray, and spot colors orange, green, and purple.
  • Paper: 100% cotton acid-free (Alpha-Cellulose / Cotton Rag) natural lint art paper (e.g. Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308g, Canson Infinity Baryta).
  • Lifespan: Passed the international weather resistance certification of Wilhelm Imaging Research. In an indoor exhibition environment without direct UV rays, the non-fading and non-yellowing lifespan can reach 100 to 200 years.

2. Acid-free photo paper type and black density (D-max) performance

  1. Textured Cotton Rag:
  • The surface has the rough texture and deep ink-absorbing texture of natural watercolor paper, with zero reflection, suitable for landscape, documentary and ink artistic conception works.
  • Physical limitations: The ink will penetrate slightly into the cotton fiber, causing the maximum black density (D-max) to be generally around 1.6~1.8, making it impossible to achieve absolutely deep black in the dark areas.
  1. Pure cotton chalk barium photo paper (Baryta Paper):
  • The surface is coated with a natural barium sulfate coating, which simulates the micro-pearl silk luster and high reflectivity of traditional silver salt photographic paper in the darkroom.
  • Advantages: D-max is as high as 2.4 or above, the highlights are as transparent as jade, and the shadows are deep and rich, showing the ultimate black and white contrast and oil painting-like texture.

3. Paper-specific ICC feature file soft proofing (Soft Proofing) in Photoshop

Before pressing "Print", you must use the monitor to accurately preview the actual contrast loss after the combination of paper and ink, to avoid the tragedy of "printing out a completely black and gray":

  1. Install paper manufacturer-specific ICC:
  • Download the .icc configuration file that exactly matches your printer model and photo paper model from the paper official website (such as Hahnemühle official website), right-click and install it to the system color management directory.
  1. Open Proof Setup:
  • In Photoshop top menu go to: View $\to$ Proof Settings $\to$ Custom.
  • Device to emulate: Select the paper ICC you have installed (eg: Hahnemuhle_PhotoRag_EpsonP9000.icc).
  • Rendering Intent:
  • Perceptual: Overall compression of colors beyond the paper gamut, retaining all tonal transition relationships, suitable for high-contrast portraits and landscapes with extremely high saturation.
  • Relative Colorimetric: Only the edge colors beyond the color gamut are cropped and mapped to the paper boundary, retaining the absolute accuracy of the colors within the color gamut, suitable for most rigorous commercial still lifes.
  • Black Point Compensation: Be sure to check it! Automatically align the deepest black point of the image with the maximum black density that the paper can express, preventing tonal gaps from appearing in dark areas.
  • Simulate Paper Color and Simulate Black Ink: Check both. At this time, the contrast of the monitor screen will drop instantly, showing the slightly grayish white texture of real matte tissue paper, which is the appearance of real physical paper.
  1. Gamut Warning and local adjustment:
  • Press the shortcut key Cmd + Shift + Y (macOS) to turn on the color gamut warning. Oversaturated areas on the screen that exceed the printing capabilities of the paper will be marked with a dazzling solid gray highlight.
  • Create a new adjustment layer: slightly adjust the hue/saturation of the color gamut overflow, and use curves to fine-tune the dark levels until the gray overflow warning completely disappears.

4. Framing, archiving, moisture-proof and anti-UV protection

  1. Deacidification of paper and air drying: The volatile solvent in the emulsion layer of the work after giclée output needs 24 hours to evaporate naturally. Do not press it into the glass frame immediately, otherwise oily mist will condense on the inside of the glass.
  2. Acid-free cold mounting and pure cotton cardboard window opening:
  • Bevel cut windows using 100% Cotton Rag acid free framing card stock.
  • Only reversible water-soluble wheat starch paste or Filmoplast P90 acid-free paper tape can be used to fix the "top two corners" on the back of the work (hinge mounting). Do not seal all sides, leaving physical gaps for the paper to naturally expand and contract with seasonal temperature and humidity.
  1. Anti-UV acrylic/low-reflective museum glass: Use museum-grade glass (Museum Glass) that can block 99% of ultraviolet rays and is coated with anti-reflective coating on both sides to prevent the works from fading under long-term spotlight lighting.
