First determine the scope of application of this guide

This article uses the official menu of Fujifilm X-T5 still photography as an example to explain how to select Film Simulation, adjust image quality options, and save as custom settings. The menus, available simulations and options of different X series / GFX bodies may be different; there are also independent menus for video shooting, please check the corresponding model manual before operation. 〔G-FS-01, G-FS-04〕

Select Basic Film Simulation

Select FILM SIMULATION in the IMAGE QUALITY SETTING menu for still photography. The X-T5 manual lists the options PROVIA/STANDARD, Velvia/VIVID, ASTIA/SOFT, CLASSIC CHROME, REALA ACE, PRO Neg., CLASSIC Neg., NOSTALGIC Neg., and provides manufacturer descriptions for some options. Use it as a creative starting point; color style preference is a matter of personal judgment and cannot be inferred from the name as an exact chemical reproduction of an actual film. 〔G-FS-01〕

Adjust available image options

Test shots of Film Simulation, WHITE BALANCE, TONE CURVE, COLOR, SHARPNESS, GRAIN EFFECT and COLOR CHROME EFFECT on a case-by-case basis by scenario and personal goals. Taking the X-T5 as an example, the grain effect can be set to OFF / WEAK / STRONG and SMALL / LARGE; the Color Chrome Effect can be set to OFF / WEAK / STRONG. The manufacturer explains that it affects the range of renderable tones of highly saturated colors. White balance can be further fine-tuned. Don't talk about a certain set of R/B offsets or highlight and shadow values as a "recipe" that works for all lights and bodies. 〔G-FS-02, G-FS-03〕

Create and save custom settings

In the X-T5 still photography menu, enter H IMAGE QUALITY SETTING > EDIT/SAVE CUSTOM SETTING, select one of the C1–C7 setting libraries of CREATE NEW, and confirm to save the current settings; they can be called in SELECT CUSTOM SETTING later. When editing an existing settings library, follow the manual to perform the save operation; if AUTO UPDATE CUSTOM SETTING is turned off, the changes will not be automatically applied. Copying to an existing settings library will overwrite the target content. Please check the target slot before saving or copying. 〔G-FS-04, G-FS-05〕

Static and video settings are maintained separately

The X-T5 manual requires video custom settings to be edited and saved separately in the MOVIE SETTING menu. Therefore, the still photography recipe does not automatically represent the video configuration; when required for both uses, check and save the settings separately. After shooting, take a test shot using the target light and output format, check the skin tone, saturated areas, shadows and highlights, and then decide whether to make adjustments. 〔G-FS-04〕
