Long Exposure Noise Reduction: Camera Settings, Processing Wait Time, and Shooting Rhythm

Using the official manuals of the Nikon Z 8 and Sony ILCE-7RM5 to explain the processing wait times and mode limitations of long exposure noise reduction, helping photographers incorporate model-specific delays into their shooting plans; not speculating on unpublished internal sensor mechanisms.

Long Exposure Noise Reduction Can Affect Shooting Rhythm

Long Exposure Noise Reduction (Long Exposure NR / LENR) may continue to occupy the camera's processing time after the exposure ends. Whether to enable it should be judged based on the camera model, shutter method, and shooting rhythm; manufacturer documents often describe the purpose of this process as addressing “bright spots” or “haze-like artifacts,” but these explanations are insufficient to support a unified interpretation of all internal camera noise sources.

Nikon Z 8: Processing Time May Almost Double

The Nikon Z 8 manual explains that when Long Exposure NR is enabled, photos with shutter speeds slower than 1 second will perform noise reduction after shooting; during processing, further shooting is not possible, roughly doubling the time required to record a photo. If the camera is turned off before processing is complete, the photo will still be saved, but the noise reduction will not be finished. Before shooting long exposure sequences, this waiting period should be factored into your intervals and battery planning.〔G-LENR-01, G-LENR-02〕

Sony α7R V: Choice Between Image Quality or Timing

The Sony α7R V manual states that for long exposures of 1 second or longer, Long Exposure NR will perform noise reduction when turned on, and the duration is the same as the shutter opening time; during processing, the next shot cannot be taken. The manual describes 'On' as prioritizing image quality and 'Off' as prioritizing shooting timing. This behavior applies to the α7R V; other models may differ.〔G-LENR-03〕

Check Mode Restrictions Before Deciding for Continuous or Sequence Shooting

The Sony α7R V manual notes that Long Exposure NR cannot be used in electronic shutter, continuous shooting, or continuous bracketing modes. If shooting star trails, interval sequences, or multiple exposures that need to be tightly connected, first check the manual for your camera regarding restrictions on the current shutter and drive modes, and do a test shot using the intended settings; do not assume that turning off noise reduction inevitably means no interval, and do not apply one camera’s processing time to other models.〔G-LENR-04〕

Confirm Processing Method and Results Per Camera

Manufacturer-provided setting explanations can confirm when the feature operates and how it impacts shooting rhythm, but they may not disclose the internal processing algorithms. Do not assume that such artifacts on image edges or bright spots indicate a specific type of “amplifier glow,” and do not treat in-camera noise reduction as a guarantee of completely eliminating thermal noise. When comparing effects, keep the original photo and check the results with the feature on and off under the same exposure and output conditions.
