Equipment Guide GUIDE-223 Document Checked

The essential difference between film and television gaffer tape and ordinary electrical insulating tape: natural synthetic rubber leaves no residue, and fabric base is tear-resistant.

In professional film crews and studios, there is an unassuming consumable whose status is equivalent to ‘on-set oxygen’—film gaffer tape (Gaffer Tape / Matte Cloth Tape). Many newcomers, trying to save money, buy a few yuan worth of ordinary electrical plastic insulation tape or industrial duct tape from hardware stores and stick them on expensive camera bodies, lens barrels, or wooden floors—only to find that a few days later, peeling it off leaves a yellow, sticky residue that cannot be removed even with medicated oil, and sometimes tears off a large chunk of the textured paint on the camera body! This guide deeply analyzes the thermodynamic shear strength of natural and synthetic rubber adhesives, the microscopic warp and weft mechanics of pure cotton heavy-duty cloth bases, and the art of using professional on-set tape.

1. The "destructive equipment" chemical nature of ordinary duct tape (Duct Tape) and electrical tape

Why is ordinary cheap tape a devastating nightmare for expensive equipment?

  • The chemical tragedy of inferior cheap pressure-sensitive adhesives (Acrylic/Solvent Adhesives):
  • Common sealing tapes and duct tapes use low-cost acrylic or solvent-based synthetic resins;
  • After this kind of glue comes into contact with the air, it will be baked by the high temperature of the studio lights (always on or exposed to the sun), and the molecular chain will quickly undergo hot melt degradation and irreversible cross-linking reaction;
  • Disaster scene when torn apart: The bonding force between glue and plastic film is far less than the adsorption force between glue and the metal body of the camera!
  • When the tape is removed, the plastic backing is torn away, and the entire layer of sticky, pungent-smelling stubborn black glue is permanently welded to the camera rabbit cage, the rubber zoom ring, or the expensive mahogany floor. Wiping it with alcohol will only melt it into a more terrifying smear of oil!

2. The myth of military-grade physics of Pro Gaffer Tape

Orthodox professional-grade strong glue (such as Pro Tapes Pro-Gaff, Nichiban, Advance):

  • Core secret: Special natural synthetic rubber pressure-sensitive adhesive system (Synthetic Rubber Resin):
  • Has extremely high cohesive strength (Cohesive Strength);
  • Whether it is baked on a movie headlight housing that is hot at 80°C for three full days, or stuck on extremely cold ice at minus 20°C;
  • The miracle of tearing off: 100% absolutely zero residue glue (Zero Residue)! When the tape is torn off, the entire layer of rubber glue is like a dry elastic film. It can be peeled off cleanly and unscathed along with the entire tape. The surface of the equipment will be as smooth as new, without leaving even a trace of fingerprints!
  • High-Thread Cotton Cloth Matrix:
  • The backing is not a stretched and deformed plastic film, but an extremely dense cotton woven fabric;
  • Physical two-way characteristic magic skill:
  1. Hand Tearable horizontally/vertically: When racing against time on set, you don’t need scissors or a utility knife at all! Pinch and break with the thumbs and index fingers of both hands, and with a crisp "pop", the tape immediately tears out a neat 90° straight cut along the latitude and longitude lines!
  2. Super tensile and shear resistance: Once it is flat on the ground, the longitudinal tensile force is as high as tens of kilograms, and the car tire will not tear if it is run over.

3. Four high-level professional industrial uses of Dali Glue on the set

  1. Cable Dressing:
  • Hundreds of meters of heavy-duty power cables and HDMI video cables are criss-crossing the ground of film and television studios;
  • Use black matte strong glue to firmly stick the cables flat on the concrete floor or carpet in an 'I' shape to prevent the director or actors from tripping and breaking the light stand worth hundreds of thousands when running;
  1. Eliminate all dazzling reflections on the fuselage and invisible brand logos:
  • The surface of black Dali glue is 100% absolutely matte light-absorbing and matte treatment (Matte Finish);
  • When shooting car advertisements or glass curtain wall indoors, affix matte heavy-duty glue to the silver-white bright metal surfaces and logos on the camera body and tripod knob to completely eliminate any stray reflections;
  1. Focus Marks and Actor Positioning Points (T-Marks):
  • Use eye-catching fluorescent glue (such as fluorescent green, fluorescent powder) to post a standard 'T' shaped movement mark on the ground. The actor can accurately stop in the predetermined depth of field focus by pressing the T-shaped horizontal line with his toes;
  1. First aid fixes everything:
  • From temporarily gluing a black flag visor to the softbox, to fixing the reflector blown by the wind, and even to first-aid bandaging of cracked shoe soles, Dali Glue is the ultimate cornerstone of the most secure place on the entire set.
