1. A common misunderstanding in the photography industry: scratching the front lens means "the lens is completely scrapped"?

Many photographers are often horrified when the front lens of their lens is accidentally scratched by a key, or even a small piece of glass breaks off the edge, thinking that this lens worth tens of thousands of dollars has been completely scrapped:

  1. Counter-intuitive truth about the physics of optical aperture imaging:
  • Every tiny area of the lens receives all-round light from the subject and focuses the light on the sensor;
  • The front lens does not correspond to a specific pixel of the image like a film or sensor;
  • Actual measurements have proven that a 2 mm minor scratch or even a few tiny dust particles on the front lens are 100% invisible on the photo when shooting with normal light and the aperture is fully open, and no physical traces can be seen at all**!
  1. True negative optical effects (where are the real lesions?):
  • Contrast Veiling Glare:
  • When a strong light source (sun, car lights or spotlights) enters the lens at a large side angle, the frosted glass section with scratched or cracked edges will diffusely reflect the light like countless micro-scattering prisms;
  • As a result, the entire photo is shrouded in a layer of dead white and gray fog, and the dark parts are completely washed away;
  • Black shadow impurities (Bokeh Onion Rings) in the out-of-focus spot of large aperture:
  • When shooting at a large aperture with a point light source to blur the spot, the shadow of the scratch will be weakly projected inside the out-of-focus spot disk, forming mottled impurities.

2. Emergency first aid for scratches and chipped corners: India Ink Blacking

If the front lens has deep scratches or chipped edges that cannot be repaired, the most effective remedy is not polishing, but "matte blackening":

  1. It is strictly prohibited to attempt polishing:
  • Any toothpaste or polishing paste will destroy the multi-layer anti-reflective optical coating (AR Coating) with a thickness of only tens of nanometers on the lens surface, grinding the part into a concave lens, causing serious aberrations;
  1. Professional matting paint filling mechanism:
  • Use a very fine line pen and dip it in a little optical matte black paint or high-quality non-reflective black India Ink;
  • Apply the black liquid extremely finely into the scratched cracks or chipped rough surfaces, and wipe the surrounding smooth mirror surface;
  • Physical magic effect: When light enters the damaged area, it is 100% absorbed by the pure black light-absorbing pigment and no longer diffusely reflected around; the backlight glare completely disappears, and the lens contrast is instantly restored to more than 98%! The price is only a loss of less than 0.1% of the light transmission, which is completely invisible to the naked eye.

3. Professional maintenance practice: non-destructive removal and replacement of front lens elements

For advanced players who pursue perfection and need to replace the new front lens:

  1. Remove the front group nameplate beauty ring:
  • The ring with the brand and focal length specifications printed on the edge of the front group of most lenses is a rubber or metal threaded ring;
  • It is strictly prohibited to use metal screwdrivers to pry (it will cause serious scratches on the edge of the lens barrel);
  • Use the Professional non-slip silicone lens suction cup/lens repair rubber cone (Lens Repair Rubber Spanner Tool), stick it tightly to the surface of the trim ring, press hard and rotate counterclockwise, and rely on friction to completely unscrew the front group trim ring.
  1. Positioning of front group retaining screws and micron gaskets:
  • Unscrew the three micro Phillips screws that fix the front lens internally or unscrew the brass external thread retaining ring;
  • EXTREMELY CRITICAL WARNING: Collimating Shims:
  • There is usually a thin brass calibration spacer with a thickness of only 0.05mm to 0.2mm under the front lens;
  • The spacer determines the optical coaxiality of the lens and the flange flat focal length;
  • The placement and number of layers of the gasket must be kept intact and must not be lost or damaged!
  1. Lens removal and new original lens replacement:
  • Use an optical vacuum suction pen to lift the damaged front lens vertically and smoothly and remove it;
  • Before putting in the new original lens, use air blowing to completely blow out all the dust inside the lens cavity;
  • Wear anti-static nitrile finger cots to seat the new lens smoothly, and screw back the fixing ring and screws;
  • After the reassembly is completed, check the four-corner resolution under the strong backlight star tester (Star Test) to ensure that the optical axis of the lens is perfectly centered and regained its new life.
