1. The fatal defeat of the ball head in the heavy load and precise composition

Although the spherical head is fast and flexible in composition, it exposes insurmountable physical flaws in rigorous architectural photography, macro photography and ultra-telephoto panoramic shots:

  1. Locking Sag/Droop - "Nodding Phenomenon"):
  • When you finally put the focus point accurately on the center of the insect flower under the 100mm macro lens;
  • The moment you tighten the main locking knob of the ball table, the eccentric clamping force of the locking mechanism will cause the ball to undergo slight physical deformation or displacement of several microns;
  • The reaction in the viewfinder is that the picture instantly "drops" several millimeters downward or sideways, and the stamen slides directly out of the viewfinder frame. The photographer has to repeatedly "predict the advance amount" to re-lock, which is extremely frustrating.
  1. Multi-axis linkage out of control:
  • Once the main locking button of the table is loosened, the three degrees of freedom of pitch (Pitch), roll (Roll) and horizontal (Pan) are released at the same time. When you just want to fine-tune the horizontal line by 0.5 degrees, the camera's pitch angle and horizontal orientation instantly tilt out of control.

2. Geared Head worm self-locking physical structure

Gear heads (such as Arca-Swiss D4, Manfrotto 410 / 405, Benro GD3WH, Leofoto G4) completely subvert the traditional friction locking method:

  1. Precision Worm Gear Transmission:
  • Each axis (pitch axis, roll axis, rotation axis) is driven by a set of precision gear meshes.
  • Extremely high transmission ratio: with one complete turn of the knob, the camera moves smoothly through space just a few degrees.
  1. Absolute Self-Locking:
  • According to the mechanical and physical characteristics of the worm gear transmission, the power can only be driven by the worm (adjustment knob), and the reverse gravity torque exerted by the camera's own weight on the worm gear end is physically impossible to push the worm in the reverse direction under the friction angle of the tooth surface!
  • means: as long as your finger releases the knob, the camera will instantly lock itself in place at any tilt angle, with absolutely no "nodding" or sinking of even a micron.
  1. Quick Release Clutch:
  • Pinch the quick-release handle on the outer ring of the knob, and the internal gear mechanism will instantly disengage. The photographer can open and close the gimbal like an ordinary 3D gimbal and quickly and roughly adjust it in place;
  • Release the handle, the gears re-engage, and turn to the micron-level knob for precise fine-tuning.

3. Practical process of absolute alignment of "horizontal, horizontal and vertical" architectural photography

When photographing grand building facades or high-end interior designs, any slanted convergence of vertical lines will destroy the sense of order and sophistication in the space:

  1. Body electronic level calibration starts:
  • The camera turns on the LCD screen dual-axis electronic level (Pitch axis and Roll axis display).
  1. Three-step method of independent precision regularization of three axes:
  • Step 1 (Adjust the Roll Knob of the Roll Axis): Slightly turn the roll gear knob with one hand, only look at the left and right tilt indicator bars of the electronic level, and accurately reset the left and right horizontal tilt to a flat green straight line.
  • Step 2 (Adjust the pitch axis Pitch knob): Fine-tune the front and rear pitch gear knobs so that the camera sensor plane and the vertical building wall are in an absolutely parallel plane (the pitch angle returns to zero). At this time, all the building columns and door frame lines in the viewfinder are all strictly parallel and absolutely vertical lines, eliminating any trapezoidal perspective distortion!
  • Step 3 (Horizontal Pan Rotation Composition): Rotate the bottom panoramic horizontal base and translate the symmetrical central axis of the building facade to the center of the picture.
  1. The three axes of the entire fine-tuning process are independent of each other. Museum-level high-precision horizontal and vertical composition can be completed with one hand within 30 seconds.

4. Application of high magnification macro splicing and matrix panoramic splicing

  1. Macro photography millimeter-level composition cropping:
  • At ultra-high magnification macro of 2:1 or 5:1, the depth of field is as thin as a piece of paper (less than 0.5mm).
  • Relying on the micro-rotation of the extremely fine thread of the gear head, you can smoothly and finely adjust the camera's optical axis tilt angle, and accurately align the limited depth of field slice with the most textured beveled surface of the subject.
  1. Multi-Row Stitching:
  • Cooperating with the node guide rail, each rotation axis of the gear head is engraved with extremely precise laser engraving graduation lines;
  • The photographer can strictly follow the rigorous mathematical matrix of "every 15° horizontal rotation and 20° vertical tilt" to shoot one by one, providing perfect material without gaps and deformations for later Gigapixel super-10 billion pixel large-format architectural panoramic shots.
