1. Lighting philosophy of the film industry: The art of shading is better than lighting

Amateur photographers are always adding lights to the scene, while real film lighting engineers (Gaffer & Grip) focus 70% of their energy on "reducing unnecessary light":

  1. The destructiveness of uncontrollable scattered light:
  • A high-power soft light is turned on, and the light inevitably diffuses and splashes onto the white walls, floor and ceiling on the side, diluting the shadows and destroying the mysterious contrast of the scene;
  1. Physical mission of Flag & Scrim System:
  • Combined with a stainless steel spring wire frame and proprietary fabric;
  • Installed on the C-Stand heavy-duty magic leg monster arm, it can "cut light, sculpt shadows, and partially darken" in space with extreme precision, giving the picture a hierarchical order like an oil painting.

2. Fabric physical properties and light effects of four core industrial flag boards

Standard film and television industry flag sets (such as 18x24 inches or 24x36 inches) are typically constructed from four specific colors of color-coded binding fabric:

  1. Black Flag (Solid Black Flag - black edging):
  • Fabric: High-density double-layer black light-absorbing flame-retardant cotton (Duvetyne);
  • Physical function: 100% absolute light blocking, light penetration rate 0%;
  • Core Practice:
  • Light Cutting: Like a razor, it accurately cuts off excess light spots falling on the background wall or floor;
  • Eyeline Flare Cutter: placed on the side of the lens hood to completely block the stray light from backlight entering the lens;
  • Negative Fill: Placed on the cheek side of the actor's backlit side, it absorbs the surrounding diffuse stray light and deepens the depth of the shadow of the chin.
  1. Single Net - green edge):
  • Fabric: Ultra-fine black seamless woven nylon microporous mesh;
  • Physical function: Evenly cuts 0.5 stops (half stop) of light, does not change the softness and hardness of the light quality at all, and absolutely does not change the color temperature!
  • The Miracle of Seamless Calendering: Intercepts light in mid-air, with no obvious traces of hard shadow projection on the edges. It can darken the overly bright white shirt or shoulder highlights by half a stop in an extremely natural and seamless manner, retaining fabric details.
  1. Double Net - red edge):
  • Fabric: Double-layer high-density black nylon microporous mesh;
  • Physical function: uniformly cut 1.0 stop (one full stop) of light;
  • Suitable for powerful light reduction when the sunlight is intense or the main light is too bright but the dimmer can no longer be turned down.
  1. Artificial silk soft light flag (Silk - yellow edge):
  • Fabric: Precision non-reflective translucent white artificial silk (Artificial Silk);
  • Physical function: Instantly disperses dazzling direct hard light into a large area of dense and gentle soft light, while reducing approximately 1.0 to 1.5 stops of light;
  • Outdoor “artificial cloudy sky” under the scorching sun: Take portraits outdoors at noon, with a 24x36 Silk flagboard propped above your head. The dazzling overhead light of the scorching sun instantly turns into a large soft light as gentle as the edge of a cloudy window, saying goodbye to the shadow of panda eyes.

3. Traceless shadow transition mechanism of Open-Ended Flags

Observing the professional flag board, you will find that there is no wire border on one edge (Open End):

  1. Why does one side have to be “unsealed”?
  • If there are steel wire frames on all four sides, the thickness of the wire itself will leave a faint thin black line shadow on the projected light;
  • One side of the open edge flag has only a suspended micro-perforated edge of the fabric;
  • With one side of the open edge facing the transition area of light, the edge of the projection shows a completely seamless natural fade-out gradient. The human eye will never be able to find where the shadow begins in the picture!

4. Three safety rules for erecting flag boards with C-Stand Magic Legs

A flag board and a cantilever extend two meters away, forming a huge lever. Improper operation can easily damage the actor:

  1. "Right-Hand Rule":
  • When tightening the large knob with the Grip Head, the moment of the falling weight (flag board) must drive the knob clockwise to further tighten!
  • Reverse installation is strictly prohibited, otherwise gravity will cause the handle to unscrew and fall;
  1. Big Leg Under the Load:
  • The three folding legs of the magic leg are at different heights. The longest and highest thigh must always face the same front of the flag board to provide maximum anti-overturning leverage support;
  1. Heavy duty sandbag presser foot (Sandbagging):
  • Whether indoors or outdoors, a cast iron sandbag weighing at least 10kg to 15kg must be placed on the tallest foot astride it to eliminate any risk of accidental kicking.
