Film Leader Retriever: Dark Box Blind Extraction Techniques and Emergency Homemade Tools for Film Leaders
135 Film self-rescue techniques when the leader is accidentally fully pulled into the cassette during rewinding, the mechanical interlocking principle of the three-leaf leader retriever, and hands-on practice with improvised leader extraction tools made from discarded film.
1. The dilemma of retracting the title into the film box and the disadvantages of violently prying the cover
When many film photographers manually rewind 135 film after shooting, they stop with a "click" sound because their fingers do not feel the change in resistance in time, or the automatic film advance SLR camera is set to "automatically rewind all the film headers into the cassette";
- Darkroom installation dilemma:
- When developing film, the film must be pulled out before it can be cut and inserted into the spool;
- The traditional crude method is to use a bottle opener or screwdriver to violently pry open the metal cover of the cassette in the secret bag. However, this will cause the disposable metal cassette to be completely damaged and deformed, making it impossible to reuse the repackaged discs, and metal burrs can easily scratch fingers or cause fatal physical scratches on the surface of the film in a completely dark environment.
- The bright and elegant redemption of Film Picker/Leader Retriever:
- The film leader shrunk inside the cassette can be "fished" out safely and without damage in a bright room or under sunlight, protecting the integrity of the cassette, which greatly facilitates darkroom operations or film replacement midway.
2. Internal mechanical meshing geometry of three-blade blade extractor
The extractor is usually a flat plastic handle, with three highly elastic, extremely thin hard polyester plastic tongue pieces protruding from the front end (piece A, piece B, piece C):
- Step 1 (Insert the guide outer piece A):
- Push the slider to the initial position, and push the first smooth plastic tongue of the extractor against the outer lip of the velvet anti-light leakage gap of the film box about 2~3 cm into the interior of the film box;
- Function: To slightly open a microscopic gap in the emulsion layer of the outer ring of the film that is close to the inner wall of the cassette.
- The second step (rotate the cassette axis to find the "click" positioning point):
- Slowly rotate the cassette axis counterclockwise or clockwise with your fingers;
- Listen attentively to the inside of the cassette: when the end of the film shrunk inside rotates and slides over the edge of the inserted plastic tongue, there will be an extremely slight, crisp "Click" bounce sound, and at the same time your fingers will feel a slight resistance!
- Stop spinning immediately! The film leader stops just above the extractor tongue for the best capture position.
- The third step (push in the barb to bite the inner piece B):
- Keep the shaft core absolutely still, and push the second slide block of the extractor to the bottom with your thumb steadily;
- The second plastic tongue piece is equipped with reverse micro hooks (barbs) or high friction coating, which is inserted directly above the head of the piece, forming an "upper and lower sandwich clover clamping closure" with the first tongue piece.
- Step 4 (Pull it out):
- Slightly tighten the cassette central shaft with your left hand in reverse direction to eliminate internal slack;
- Pinch the handle of the extractor with your right hand, and slowly pull it outward while maintaining a straight angle;
- There was just a smooth and soft sound of "swish", and the film head that had been retracted deep was tightly bitten by the double tongue pieces, and was smoothly brought out from the velvet gap intact!
3. The five-minute homemade first aid method of "waste film + double-sided tape" when there are no professional tools around
If you don’t bring a professional extractor with you during your trip, you can quickly make your own god-level extraction tool with just a piece of scrap film and a piece of strong double-sided tape:
- Cut the tongue guide:
- Find a piece of 135 film that has been processed and discarded, about 10 cm in length;
- Use scissors to trim both sides of the front end into smooth arcs (to avoid burrs from getting stuck on the velvet).
- Attach ultra-thin strong oily double-sided tape:
- On the photosensitive emulsion surface (inside) about 2 cm from the front end of the film, stick a small piece of ultra-thin high-viscosity film double-sided tape (3M 9448A recommended) horizontally;
-Tear off the release paper to reveal the strong adhesive surface. Leave 2 mm of film exposed at the front end of the adhesive surface to prevent sticking.
- Insertion and bonding blind extraction:
- Gently slide this self-made tape guide along the velvet gap into the inside of the film box;
- Rotate the cassette axis until you hear a "click" sound, and gently pinch the outer wall of the cassette to squeeze the inner film and double-sided tape tightly for 3 seconds;
- Pull it outward at a constant speed, and the inner film header will be firmly stuck by the double-sided tape and taken out of the cassette!
