Folding leather-bodied camera (Folder Camera) mechanical unfolding interlock, straight optical axis, and double exposure prevention mechanism

Classic 120 folding medium format cameras (Zeiss Super Ikonta, Voigtländer Bessa II, Agfa Super Isolette) with folding hinges and telescopic struts that lock when extended, light axis verticality (collimation) fine adjustment, and red window/mechanical linkage to prevent double exposure.

1. The engineering miracle and fragile balance of the Folder Camera

The folding leather chamber camera is the pinnacle masterpiece of human mechanical manufacturing in the mid-20th century - a sophisticated machine that shoots 6x6 or 6x9 shockingly huge format negatives. After folding, it can be as thin as a book and can be easily put into a coat pocket:

  1. Hinge link expansion mechanism (Erection Struts Mechanism):
  • Press the front cover release button, and the front cover will pop forward under the elastic force of the spring;
  • The precision chrome-plated metal scissor-type folding struts (Struts) on both sides unfold and slide, and make two crisp "click" self-locking sounds when reaching the full stroke, firmly supporting the front lens group and shutter on the working focal plane.
  1. Fatal pain point: Optical Misalignment:
  • The mount for modern fixed-body lenses is cut from a single piece of rigid metal;
  • while the folding camera lens hangs from the extended hinged door panel and soft-leather cavity front.
  • After decades of opening and closing wear, external squeezing or falling, as long as the support arm is bent or deformed by even 0.5 mm, the optical axis of the lens will be severely tilted relative to the film plane!
  • Result: The left side of the photo is sharp and the right side is severely out of focus; or due to the change in flange distance, infinity is completely out of focus when shooting at full aperture.

2. Lens plate optical axis flatness detection and support rod adjustment

Before loading the first roll of precious film, the optical parallelism of the old folding camera had to be hard-core calibrated:

  1. Ground Glass Check:
  • Open the camera back;
  • On the focal plane guide rail of the film frame where the 120 film was originally placed, flatten a piece of frosted focusing glass with the matte side facing the lens, and temporarily fix it with tape;
  • Aim the camera at a distant building 1000 meters outside, set the shutter to B, fully open with the shutter release cable, and the aperture is fully open (such as f/3.5).
  1. High-power magnifying glass inspects the focus consistency of the four corners:
  • Use a 10x magnifying glass to observe the inverted real image on the frosted glass;
  • Check the clarity of the center, upper left corner, upper right corner, lower left corner, and lower right corner of the screen:
  • If the center and right side of the picture are extremely clear, but the left side is obviously blurred: It is proven that the metal folding support rod on the left side has a retracted virtual position, and the optical axis of the lens is skewed toward the left rear!
  1. Support limit stop precision fine adjustment (Strut Bending/Shimming):
  • Carefully observe the positioning pins and grooves at the bottom of the support poles on both sides after unfolding;
  • If the strut is slightly bent due to impact, use precision flat-nose pliers to pad thick leather (anti-pinch chrome plating), and reversely correct the curvature of the strut extremely gently with micron-level steps;
  • Insert a 0.1mm ultra-thin brass shim (Brass Shim) into the excessively worn limit slot until the lens board is straight and straight when unfolded again, and there is no false position when you gently shake it with your finger. The four corners of the frosted glass are in infinite distance and the focus is as sharp as a knife.

3. Double Exposure Prevention and Red Window Rolling

Many novices who play with old folding machines often end up with the tragedy of "one negative has two frames superimposed on it, but three empty frames behind it":

  1. Red Window direct reading (Red Window) manual anti-reexposure process:
  • For cheap manual film transfer and folding machines (the back of the machine has a small red circular light filter window):
  • There is no anti-double exposure linkage mechanism inside the camera body. The mechanical shutter is released once when the shutter is pressed.
  • Professional muscle memory tips: Pass the test immediately after taking the photo!
  • Composition $\to$ Press the shutter to take a picture $\to$ Immediately rotate the winding wheel with your thumb, and stare at the Arabic numerals inside the red window from "1" to "2" and stop!
  • Never leave overrolling until the next shot, otherwise overprinted waste will be produced if forgotten.
  1. Mechanical linkage self-locking system (Interlock System - taking Super Ikonta as an example):
  • The high-end body has a built-in complex gear lever interlocking mechanism;
  • After pressing the shutter to take a picture, the shutter release button on the top of the camera is automatically and rigidly locked by the internal linkage, and it cannot be pressed no matter how hard it is pressed;
  • Only when the film advance wheel is turned and the film advances by exactly one frame, the linkage gear pushes the micro lever to unlock the shutter button, and at the same time, the red window counter automatically jumps to the next digit, achieving absolute prevention of false triggers and missed shots.
