Stand development of film and Rodinal at extremely high dilution (1:100) for edge sharpening compensation

Unlock the potential of the oldest compound chemicals, decipher the self-initiated local exhaustion mechanism of one-hour zero-stir development (Local Exhaustion), and achieve the mixed processing of different ISO films in one can with nearly cheating high-contrast dynamic compression.

1. Physical and chemical principles of Stand Development

Traditional development requires vigorous turning and stirring every 30 seconds to continuously replenish fresh developer solution to the emulsion surface; while static development requires that the developer tank be inverted for 1 minute after pouring the solution, and then left to stand completely and steadily on the table for 60 minutes, without touching, turning, or stirring during the process! **

  1. Highlight Self-Limiting: When the film is exposed to strongly bright areas (such as the sky, white walls), the trace amounts of hydroquinone in the local emulsion are rapidly oxidized and reduced, and the active ingredients in the solution are completely exhausted within 5 minutes. The development reaction automatically stops without external stirring and replenishment, so the highlights will never be overshot or overshot (Blown Highlights)!
  2. Shadow Continuous Development: The dark part of the film is only exposed to weak light, and very few developing molecules are consumed. The surrounding effective liquid continues to penetrate extremely smoothly in the next 55 minutes, fully restoring the silver salt in the deepest dark part to the delicate dark texture.
  3. Amazing Edge Effect/False Sharpness: On the extremely narrow boundary between highlight and shadow, the rich active liquid in the shadow diffuses slightly toward the edge of the highlight, spontaneously forming a micron-level black line border at the junction, visually bringing astonishing resolution like a knife.

2. Rodinal (R09 One Shot) 1:100 extreme dilution operating specifications

  • Iron law of drug dosage calculation: Although the dilution ratio is 1:100, for every roll of 135 or 120 film developed, must ensure that the absolute volume of the original solution is not less than 3.5ml to 5ml! To develop two rolls of 135 film, use a 1000ml large can, inject 10ml of Rodinal stock solution and add 990ml of 20°C distilled water.
  • Anti-streak operation process:
  1. After pouring the medicine into the jar, turn it over gently and continuously 30 times in the first 60 seconds, and then tap it firmly on the table 3 times to break the bubbles;
  2. Place it on a stable table with a room temperature strictly maintained at 20°C, and turn an opaque cardboard box upside down to completely avoid light;
  3. It is strictly prohibited to shake during the process! If weak shaking occurs, the flow of settled bromide ions will form unsightly vertical sagging black stripes (Bromide Drag) at the perforations of the film;
  4. Pour out the liquid on time after 60 minutes and perform normal stop and fixation.
  • One-pot mixing magic: Whether you put a roll of ISO 100 Pan F, a roll of ISO 400 HP5, or even a roll of expired Tri-X that has been pushed to EI 1600, you can put it out of the can at the same time under Rodinal 1:100 static development, with balanced light and dark, and moderate contrast!
