Commercial still life glassware lighting (Bright Field and Dark Field): Outline outline of bright field and dark field
The most difficult subject of commercial photography - transparent total reflection colorless glassware (perfume bottles, red wine glasses) lighting rules: practical operation of bright field (Bright Field, black edge outline) and dark field (Dark Field, white edge outline).
1. The physical dilemma of glassware photography: transparency and total reflection
Photographing metal or rough objects can illuminate the surface by direct lighting; but glassware has completely different physical and optical properties:
- High light transmittance and colorless transparency: Light shining directly on the glass will pass through directly and cannot form light and dark fluctuations on the surface of the vessel.
- High surface reflectivity and mirror illusion: If the light is shined directly on the glass, not only will the shape of the container be unable to be displayed, but dazzling circular reflective white spots will be left on the smooth surface of the glass, exposing the reflection of the photographer and studio.
- The ultimate solution philosophy: light does not hit the glass, but the environment around the glass!
- The edges of the glass have a physical lens effect that refracts light. By controlling the light and shade of the background and side baffles, the photographer allows the edge of the glass to "reflect the reflection of the environment", thereby outlining the pure blade-like outline of the cup wall.
2. Bright Field: Pure black outline on a white high-key background
The bright field method produces a crystal-clear, high-key picture: the background is transparent and pure white, and the edge of the glass is clearly outlined by a circle of extremely beautiful, slender and deep black lines:
- Lighting layout (single main light for background):
- Place a flash with a standard cover or reflective umbrella directly behind the photography stage, and hit it directly on a translucent Diffuser Panel or a large piece of sulfuric acid paper from back to front.
- The glass is placed on a black light-absorbing velvet stand approximately 50cm to 80cm in front of the acrylic panel.
- Make sure not a single ray of light hits the front of the glass!
- Black Flags determine the outline thickness:
- When viewed from the front, the glass is almost invisible due to the completely white background.
- The key to the miracle happening: Set up two long strips of black light-absorbing cardboard (black flag board) on the left and right edges of the white background board.
- Physical phenomenon: The curved surface on the edge of the glass is like a convex lens, refracting the black reflection of the black cardboard on both sides into the camera lens without loss!
- Adjust the thickness of the outline: Move the black cards on both sides inward toward the glass, and the black edges of the outline will immediately become thick and tough; push the black cards outward, and the black edges will become as fine as hair.
3. Dark Field: Dazzling luminous white edges against a deep black background
The dark field method presents a very luxurious high-end advertising texture: the background is pure black as deep as night, and the left and right walls and mouth of the glass are like electrified neon optical fibers, emitting crystal clear and dazzling white light:
- Absolute background light absorption shielding:
- Hang a completely non-reflective Black Velvet cloth directly behind the glass to ensure that the background is absolutely pure black (RGB value is 0).
- Rim Backlighting on both sides:
- Install two long strip softboxes (Strip Softbox, such as 30x120cm) with honeycomb grilles, and place them respectively at the left and right rear of the glass at an angle of approximately 135°.
- The two softboxes are tilted relative to each other and aimed at the edges of both sides of the glass. The beam only passes through the outer edge of the glass wall. It is strictly forbidden to shine directly on the lens and cause glare.
- Physical refraction luminescence:
- Strong side backlight penetrates into the thickness of the side of the glass, and the light occurs Total Internal Reflection inside the dense glass material, and finally emerges from the front edge;
- In the dark night, a luminous glass with bright crystal texture and clear outlines jumped out.
4. Dust elimination and static electricity removal specifications
- Microscopic dust disaster caused by electrostatic adsorption:
- The glass surface easily generates static electricity due to friction, which attracts fluff and fine particles in the air. It cannot escape under macro lens and strong backlight. It will take several hours to remove the contaminants during post-retouching.
- Dust-proof standard process:
- Operators should wear powder-free nitrile gloves throughout the process, and it is strictly forbidden to touch the glass with bare hands to leave sebum fingerprints;
- Use an anti-static dust removal ionizing air gun to blow the cup body to completely neutralize the static charge on the surface and blow away the floating dust;
- Use high-purity isopropyl alcohol (IPA) pure solvent to degrease and wipe before shooting. After drying, the cup body will be spotless.
