Time-Lapse Day to Night Holy Grail Holy Grail Smooth Transition Exposure Control
The whole process of time-lapse photography from sunset to night (Day to Night), up to 10 stops of light sudden drop, "holy grail photography" exposure difficulties, manual step fine-tuning, qDslrDashboard dynamic smoothing and LRTimelapse de-flicker (Deflicker).
1. Why is it called "The Holy Grail"? Dynamic lighting span limit
Among all photography subjects in nature, time-lapse photography from sunset to starry sky rise is called the "Holy Grail" of time-lapse photographers:
- Absolute illumination plummet more than 1000 times:
- From strong sunlight at noon (illuminance about 100,000 Lux) to deep darkness after sunset (illuminance only 0.1 Lux), the light intensity plummets from 12 to 15 levels (thousands of times) in just 2 hours!
- The complete debacle of automatic exposure (Av/Auto mode):
- If you directly shoot in aperture priority Av mode, the metering value calculated by the camera microprocessor will discretely jump by 1/6 stop for each shot. After the video is synthesized, the screen will appear a "Flicker" with crazy light and dark jumps, and the entire video will be scrapped.
- Limitations of fixed parameters (M file):
- If all parameters are fixed, the screen will completely turn black 15 minutes after sunset, and the next few hundred pictures will be completely black and meaningless.
- The true secret of the Holy Grail: During hours of continuous shooting, without the camera shifting even a micron, dynamically and smoothly gradually adjust the exposure time, ISO and aperture, and finally use the algorithm to dissolve the step jump into an extremely silky flow of time.
2. Shooting interval (Interval) and physical parameter locking specifications
- Interval Timing:
- When shooting the city from day to night, the speed of traffic and pedestrians determines that the shooting interval must be extremely tight (usually set to 4 seconds to 6 seconds);
- Maximum shutter limit at night: The shutter exposure time must not exceed the shooting interval! If the interval is set to 5 seconds, the maximum shutter speed at night can only be 4 seconds (leave 1 second for memory card writing and noise reduction buffering).
- Be careful to prevent the aperture blades from shaking: manual old lens or the aperture micro-disassembly method:
- In modern automatic lenses, the aperture motor opens and closes repeatedly every time a picture is taken. Small mechanical shrinkage tolerances can cause random fluctuations of 1% in the amount of light transmitted per frame, which is the source of time-lapse flicker.
- Countermeasures: Use an old lens with a fully mechanical infinite aperture; or press the depth of field prediction button on a modern SLR body to shrink the aperture, then loosen the lens half a turn to disengage the electronic contacts, so that the physical aperture blades are constantly stuck at the fixed aperture.
3. Professional automated smoothing solution: qDslrDashboard and in-camera exposure compensation
At the shooting location, the photographer connects the camera to the tablet via wireless Wi-Fi or USB OTG cable:
- qDslrDashboard Intelligent Holy Grail Algorithm (Auto Holy Grail):
- The software reads the histogram highlight and dark integrated areas of each RAW photo transmitted back from the camera in real time;
- When it detects that the sun is setting and the overall scene begins to darken reaching the threshold, the software automatically sends instructions to the camera to extend the shutter speed by one stop in steps of 1/3 (for example, from 1/125s to 1/100s);
- When the shutter time is extended to the set upper limit (such as 4 seconds), the software automatically steps in to smoothly increase the ISO (step by step from ISO 100 to ISO 1600).
- Body screen and anti-shake off:
- Completely turn off in-camera automatic long exposure noise reduction (LENR - resulting in doubled writing time and missed shots);
- Completely turn off lens anti-shake;
- Dim or turn off the camera LCD screen to save power and prevent reflections from ambient light.
4. Ultimate smoothing in post-production: LRTimelapse core de-flicker workflow
After the shooting is completed, hundreds of RAW files contain dozens of light and dark step faults caused by jumps in exposure parameters. Mathematical smoothing must be performed with the help of the global industry gold standard software LRTimelapse (LRT):
- Automatic extraction of keyframes (Keyframes Wizard):
- Load the material directory into LRTimelapse, the software automatically analyzes the exposure curve of the entire film, and automatically generates a blue diamond-shaped "Keyframe" where the shutter or ISO jumps.
- Lightroom lossless color correction and metadata synchronization:
- Perform targeted refinement in Lightroom on only a dozen marked keyframes (sunset keyframe to adjust color temperature, night keyframe to enhance darkness and reduce noise);
- Save modified data for all keyframes as XMP side files.
- Polynomial curve stepless smoothing (Holy Grail Wizard):
- Return to LRTimelapse and click "Holy Grail Wizard";
- The software automatically calculates the accurate compensation value for each exposure parameter jump, generates a smooth and beautiful high-order polynomial dynamic exposure compensation curve (Exposure Compensation Curve), and performs automatic mathematical gradient tweening on hundreds of photos without manual color correction.
- Visual Deflicker:
- Turn on the double-pass de-flicker algorithm to completely smooth out any remaining microscopic lighting jumps to zero;
- Finally export a 4K/8K ProRes 422 video blockbuster: the golden sunset slowly sinks into the skyline, the street lamps light up one by one like stars, the traffic turns into a long golden river, and the bright Milky Way rises quietly in the sapphire night above. The entire video is silky and transparent, without any flickering of light and dark.
