Jewelry and highly reflective metal still life lighting: Softbox and black and white card flag board (Flag) outlines the three-dimensional effect of black edges

When photographing polished stainless steel, gold watches and diamond rings, beginners often find that the metal surface reflects the messy reflections of the entire room like a mirror, or uses a large softbox to create a textureless pale gray light. This guide provides an in-depth analysis of the normal reflection law of reflective surfaces, soft light tracing of gradient reflective surfaces, and the high-end commercial lighting technique of using pure black cardboard flags (Black Flags) to carve deep 'black lines (Black Edge)' on the edges of mirrored metal.

1. The physical and optical nature of metal and mirror objects: What you photograph is not the object, but the environment it reflects.

Photographing rough light-absorbing objects (such as wood, cotton and linen clothing, fruits) relies on the diffuse reflection of the object. Where the light comes from directly determines the direction of the shadow:

  • Total reflection of specular objects (Specular Reflection):
  • Polished gold, platinum rings, metal cases and gemstone facets have nearly 100% mirror-like high reflectivity;
  • They themselves do not have their own "light and dark inherent colors"! All the light, dark, and colors presented on its surface are completely reflected mirror images of the surrounding 360-degree physical environment on the metal surface;
  • If you place a ring in an ordinary white-walled room for photography, the surface of the ring will reflect the ceiling light pipe, the camera lens, the photographer's face and even the debris beneath your feet;
  • The core rule of commercial still life: When shooting metal jewelry, the essence of lighting is to create an absolutely pure and controllable external reflection environment (Light Environment) for the metal!

2. Large-area soft light diffusion board: Create silky and delicate metallic gradient luster

It is strictly prohibited to use any direct naked light or small flash. Strong point light sources will only leave dazzling white dead white overexposed small light spots on the metal:

  1. Sulfuric Acid Paper/Soft Light Sulfuric Acid Paper Screens (Diffusion Panels):
  • Build two large-area translucent professional soft-light sulfuric acid paper screens, which are placed on the left and right sides of the metal jewelry, almost close to the still life table;
  1. The birth of gradient light quality (Gradient Lighting):
  • The flash is slanted from behind the soft light screen at a certain angle. When the light penetrates the sulfuric acid paper, it forms a smooth and continuous brightness gradient zone from high brightness (white) to dim (soft gray) on the sulfuric acid paper;
  • This gradient band is completely reflected by the metal surface, and the metal surface instantly presents a silver-gray transition as delicate and luxurious as polished silk, showing a high-end precision texture.

3. The light control magic of Black Flags: without black, there is no white

If everything is surrounded by white light, metal jewelry will fall into "snow blindness" - it will be completely white and lose the sharp three-dimensional edges and tough frames unique to metal:

  • The Black Line/Edge:
  • Observe any official commercial blockbuster of any top-level Swiss watch or Cartier jewelry, there must be an extremely thin, deep, and razor-sharp pure black reflective line on the metal bezel and the edge of the blade!
  • Practical operation of physical interception of black card flag board:
  • Prepare several strips of pure black matte cardboard (or black flocked light-absorbing board, called flag board) cut into long strips;
  • Set up the black card in the tiny gap between two white soft boxes, or hang it directly in front of the camera lens against the metal edge;
  • Optical mirror landing point: The chamfer (Bevel) normal of the metal edge is exactly aligned with the black cardboard. The black cardboard does not emit any light, and the metal edge instantly reflects a bottomless, absolutely pure black line!
  • Three-dimensional explosion: This pure black reflective line is next to the extreme highlight reflected by the sulfuric acid paper. The white and black are closely interlocked, and the sharpness of the metal, the three-dimensional geometric outline and the density of heavy metal burst out instantly.

4. The multi-faceted fire and dispersion of diamonds and gems as the finishing touch

The brilliance of diamonds depends on the total reflection and dispersion of light entering the diamond crystal (prism spectroscopy):

  • All soft light will kill the diamond: If you use a large soft box, all cutting surfaces inside the diamond will reflect uniform white light, and the diamond will look like a lifeless piece of ordinary plastic glass!
  • Sparkle Accent Light:
  • Under the premise of setting up a large-area softbox, add a small hard-light LED spotlight with a fine honeycomb condenser (Snoot) diagonally above the camera;
  • A small, powerful direct beam hits the table and crown facets at the top of the diamond;
  • The beam penetrates 57 standard brilliant-cut sections, producing extremely high-frequency microscopic dispersion, dismantling the white light into dazzling red, orange, blue, and purple flashes of colorful Fire (Scintillation)!
