The ultimate in low-light and low-light handheld photography: breathing control, body geometric triangle support and shutter anti-shake techniques

Pure handheld shooting breaks the limit of the safe shutter speed reciprocal law, the rigid trigonometric support posture of the human skeleton, the shooting shutter at the end of the sniper's exhalation and the sharpness selection method for continuous shooting.

1. The boundary between safety shutter rule (Reciprocal Rule) and body image stabilization

There is an iron law in traditional photography theory that has been around for half a century - handheld safe shutter speed:
$$\text{Safety shutter time} \le \frac{1}{\text{Equivalent focal length of the lens}} \text{ seconds}$$
(For example, the safety shutter of a 50mm lens is 1/50s, and the safety shutter of a 200mm telephoto lens is 1/200s).
However, in extremely dark midnight streets, underground mines or candlelit rooms, in order to lower the ISO and ensure pure image quality, photographers are often forced to slow down the shutter to 1/4s, 1/2s or even a full 1.0 seconds! Although modern cameras are equipped with five-axis image stabilization (IBIS), if the hand is held loosely, mechanical micro-vibration will still cause all the details of the picture to be wiped out.

2. Human skeleton mechanics "rigid tripod" body configuration

Human muscles are easily prone to microscopic tremors due to fatigue. Only by relying on the mutual support of the skeletal structure can gravity be transmitted to the earth to achieve absolute self-locking:

  1. Principle of double elbow subcostal adduction and closure (Tuck Elbows):
  • Many novices hold the camera with their elbows hanging in the air (spread out like chicken wings). Their arms are completely under cantilever stress, and their muscles will inevitably shake at a high frequency within 10 seconds.
  • Correct posture: Both elbows must be clamped inward and pressed tightly against your chest ribs or upper abdominal diaphragm! Use the ribcage bones to build two indestructible rigid lower fulcrums for the arms.
  1. Three-Point Facial Anchor on the forehead/eye socket:
  • Place the camera's electronic viewfinder (EVF) rubber eyecup tightly against the orbital bone of your right eye, and press the back of the camera slightly against your forehead and brow bone.
  • At this time: right hand, left hand palm rest, eye socket and forehead three points form an extremely solid equilateral triangle in space, and the camera's freedom of slight shaking is completely locked.
  1. Gait, stance and relying on the environment:
  • When standing, take half a step forward and backward with your feet, and sink your body's center of gravity to your Dantian;
  • Observe the surrounding environment: As long as there are strong tree trunks, lamp poles, cement pillars or brick walls, lean your shoulders or back firmly against the wall decisively! The body and the building are integrated, and the shaking amplitude of the human body is instantly reduced by 80%.

3. Sniper Breathing Control and Muscle Relaxation Techniques (Breathing Cycle)

Special forces snipers have a strict set of respiratory physiological controls when shooting ultra-long-distance targets. Photographers should strictly follow the same rules when pressing the shutter:

  1. Deep breathing, slow breathing and apnea interval (Respiratory Pause):
  • It is strictly forbidden to press the shutter while holding your breath (holding your breath for a long time will cause the intrathoracic pressure to increase and the heart to beat violently. The physical pulse of the pulse will be directly transmitted to the hands and cause the body to beat).
  • Standard Procedure: Take a deep breath, and then exhale slowly and deeply...when the air in the lungs has been exhaled about 70%~80%, stop breathing naturally (at this time, the diaphragm is completely in a relaxed and balanced state, the chest is completely still, and the heart rate is gentle).
  1. Use your fingertips to press very lightly (Squeeze, Don't Jab):
  • The first pad of your index finger rests lightly on the shutter button. Never use your fingers to "poke hard";
  • Just like pulling the trigger of a rifle, use smooth and restrained force to slowly apply pressure in the direction of the body, allowing the shutter to trigger and fire smoothly and imperceptibly.

4. Camera continuous shooting selection method and mechanical shutter vibration avoidance

  1. Low-speed burst shooting envelope selection (Burst Shooting Trick):
  • Set the camera drive mode to Low-speed continuous shooting (approximately 3-5 frames per second).
  • Press and hold the shutter button for continuous shooting 3 to 4 pictures:
  • 1st picture: The moment your finger presses the shutter button, a slight downward shear force will be generated. The 1st picture is usually slightly blurred;
  • Picture 2 and Picture 3: At this time, the fingers are in an absolutely still and pressed state, the body is completely free from human interference, and the clarity reaches the peak of physics!
  • Picture 4: There may be rebound microshocks the moment your finger releases the shutter.
  • Actual verification: In 1/2 second extremely slow handheld shooting, the sharpness pass rate of the second or third middle frame is as high as more than 85%!
  1. Enable electronic front curtain (EFCS) or silent shutter:
  • Eliminates the mechanical rebound shock when the physical front curtain falls, allowing the sensor to complete the exposure in an absolutely calm state.
