Nikon Z6 HDMI External Recording: Conditions and Limitations for Enabling N‑Log and ProRes RAW
According to the official Nikon Z 6 manual and manufacturer announcements regarding HDMI external recording, 10-bit N-Log, and the upgraded 12-bit RAW output conditions and limitations; no rankings of dynamic range/image quality are made without on-site measurements, and the capabilities of the Z6 are not generalized to other camera bodies.
First distinguish between HDMI monitoring, N-Log and RAW output
The Nikon Z 6 can output video to an HDMI device, but "plugging in an external recorder" itself does not equal RAW. The manual explains the ordinary HDMI output bit depth and 10-bit N-Log external recording restrictions respectively; RAW video also requires the RAW video output function upgrade and compatible recorder provided by Nikon. The following only lists the conditions according to the Z 6 document, and does not horizontally rank the dynamic ranges of different models or different recording modes. 〔G-CA446-01, G-CA446-04〕
10-bit N-Log external recording
In the HDMI option of the Setup Menu, Z 6 can select 8-bit or 10-bit output; 10-bit is only available for compatible external recorders. N-Log needs to select 10-bit and record the images directly to the external device. It cannot record to the internal memory card at the same time. Before shooting, confirm the input signal and recording status on the recorder; if the standby timer expires, HDMI output will end. 〔G-CA446-01, G-CA446-02〕
Body limitations of 4K external recording
The manual lists 10-bit output limitations: When 3840 × 2160 is selected, videos will not be written to the internal memory card and photos cannot be taken; the Z 6's viewing angle is about 90% of normal. HDMI output is not available when recording in 1080p 120p / 100p or slow motion. The external recorder, resolution, frame rate and camera settings must be checked together. 〔G-CA446-03〕
Conditions for 12-bit ProRes RAW
Nikon's announcement states that the Z 6's RAW video output requires a feature upgrade installed by a Nikon service agency; once enabled, 12-bit UHD or Full HD RAW can be output to a compatible recorder via HDMI. At the time, Nikon listed the Atomos Ninja V as capable of recording ProRes RAW, and noted that recorders not listed were not guaranteed to work. Upgrades and recorder support are affected by region, firmware and product version. Please check with Nikon / Atomos' current compatibility instructions before purchasing or deploying. 〔G-CA446-04, G-CA446-05〕
Don’t treat specifications as a picture quality test
Bit depth, RAW / N-Log, and internal compression formats describe recording methods and workflows, and do not directly prove that a certain piece of footage is necessarily better under a specific exposure, noise, dynamic range, or color correction range. To compare specific results, samples should be taken using the same camera, lens, exposure, frame rate, and post-production process, and file settings should be recorded; this guide does not claim that RAW can losslessly adjust white balance, increase fixed-stop dynamic range, or eliminate in-camera processing.
