Street photography "Fishing Technique": a preset background frame waiting for the dramatic subject

Many novices in street photography hold their cameras all day long and chase passers-by like crazy and blindly on the streets. Not only are they exhausted, they are often looked down upon by passers-by and even complained about, but the photos they take back have messy backgrounds and no aesthetic appeal. The core secret of the world’s top street photography masters is the opposite ‘Fishing Technique’. This guide provides an in-depth analysis of the psychology of actors' space before setting up the stage, pre-judging and pre-focusing of the frame, and the practical art of body disguise and silent concealment.

1. Hunting vs. Fishing: Two philosophical paradigms of street photography

There are two main schools of street photographers:

  1. The Hunter:
  • Photographers patrol the streets frequently, scanning the surroundings with sharp eyes and radar. Once they find interesting people or emergencies, they quickly rush forward and lift up their cameras to capture photos;
  • Pain Points: The body is in motion and the composition is hasty and rough. The background is often filled with messy trash cans, abrupt illegally parked cars and passers-by; and it is very aggressive.
  1. Fishing Current (The Fisherman / Fishing Laws):
  • The photographer gave up running completely, like an old fisherman who knows the nature of water;
  • First look for a background and stage frame (stage construction) with beautiful light and shadow, pure geometry, and a sense of form on the street;
  • Then set up the machine, adjust the parameters, lock the focus, and stand aside calmly and wait quietly (hang the bait and lower the hook);
  • The only task is to wait patiently for the best protagonist that conforms to your aesthetic intuition (whether it is a lady in a red dress, an old man holding a black umbrella, or a running child) to naturally walk into the center of your trap frame (bite the hook)!

2. Three major spatial visual characteristics of high-quality ‘The Fishing Spot’

What kind of street scene deserves to be a top fishing spot?

  • Feature 1: High-contrast dramatic natural local light (The Light Pocket):
  • On a sunny afternoon, tall skyscrapers cast large areas of deep shadows on the streets, except for a sharp and narrow golden strip of sunlight (searchlight effect) cut between the two floors;
  • The background is completely in dark shadows. As long as someone steps into this beam of sunlight, the character will be instantly illuminated by the spotlight, and the background will naturally peel off!
  • Feature 2: Interesting graphic geometric symbols and pop poster (The Graphic Poster):
  • A minimalist solid color wall with strong colors on the street, a huge fashion advertising poster (such as a huge eye, a pair of outstretched wings, a witty comic slogan);
  • This setting itself has powerful potential for narrative metaphor.
  • Feature 3: Geometric Architectural Frames (Frames within Frames):
  • Bridge arches, bus shelter glass frames, and tunnel exit silhouette black frames;
  • The space is naturally divided into picture-in-picture structures.

3. Lock all parameters in advance: Trap Focus

The absolute advantage of the fishing method is to completely eliminate all confusion before shooting:

  1. Absolutely perfect composition (Pixel-Level Framing):
  • You have plenty of time, up to several minutes or even half an hour, to slowly fine-tune the camera's horizontal and vertical guide line perspective;
  • Avoid even a single extra cluttered wire on the edge to create the ultimate balanced sense of order.
  1. Manual pre-focusing to lock specific floor tiles on the ground (Pre-Focusing):
  • Determine the location of the perfect golden section point that you want the protagonist to step on (for example, the second white bar of the zebra crossing);
  • Manually lock focus on that tile, immediately switch to MF manual focus, and turn off autofocus completely!
  • Aperture received f/5.6 or f/8 (depth of field covers 1 meter front and rear error tolerance);
  • The shutter is locked at 1/500s or above (completely freezing the movement of pedestrian footsteps).
  1. Instant reaction of combo release: When the perfect protagonist steps on the target floor tile in milliseconds, press and hold the high-speed continuous shooting to release 3~5 shots to capture the decisive moment when the footsteps form an elegant inverted V shape!

4. Photographer’s body invisibility camouflage art (Invisibility)

How to prevent passers-by from noticing that you are photographing them and becoming wary and stiff?

  • The psychologically induced disguise of ‘I’m just taking pictures of landscapes/architectures’:
  • Never aim your camera at pedestrians!
  • The photographer pretends to be completely blind to pedestrians, looks at the sky or distant buildings, holds the camera on his chest or uses the flip screen to lower his head to operate;
  • Passersby will subconsciously think: "This photographer is taking a picture of the beautiful building behind him, and I am a passerby who inadvertently broke into the background of his shot." The passerby will keep an absolutely relaxed and natural gait and stride through;
  • Body language closed loop after filming:
  • After pressing the shutter button, never put down the camera and stare at passers-by! **
  • Continue to hold the camera in front of your eyes, look through passersby into the distance, and pretend to be waiting for him to walk by so you can continue to take photos of the aerial scene;
  • Pedestrians will even apologize and leave quickly after walking past the camera. You have silently harvested a masterpiece of humanistic documentary passed down from generation to generation.
